1989: Lhasa under martial law 
 
Martial law was declared in Lhasa in March 1989 after independence demonstrations by monks and nuns. Six months later, army posts -- one just visible here -- were still placed at every entrance to the Barkhor (sacred circuit around the Jokhang temple)
