Aelfthryth, the constant partner of John, and the beloved mother of Danny, Tom, Joe and Max, died from cancer on
31 December 2012. She is remembered by friends as a person of unique character and as a lively colleague with
an infectious laugh. A strong believer in socialist principle, she asserted in the last year of her life that "I have lived
by the NHS, and I shall die by the NHS". She had shown the same commitment to many causes with John over many decades. This
